Sydney Veterans Mental Health Services - Clinical Care for Our Returned Service Members

Military service requires immense courage, discipline, and sacrifice. But for many Veterans, the challenges don’t end when active duty does. Military service exposes individuals to unique psychological stressors that can have long-lasting effects on mental health.

At Gordon Private Hospital in Sydney, we recognise the unique mental health needs of Veterans and are committed to offering care that honours their service and supports their healing.

Understanding Veterans Mental Health

Veterans are at significantly increased risk of developing mental health disorders due to exposure to combat, operational stress, and prolonged periods of high-alert environments.

Common presentations among Veterans include:

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Often triggered by exposure to traumatic events during service, PTSD may manifest as intrusive memories, avoidance behaviours, hyperarousal, and mood disturbances.

Major Depressive Disorder and Anxiety Disorders: Persistent low mood, irritability, sleep disturbances, and generalised anxiety are prevalent in post-service populations.

Substance Use Disorders: Alcohol and other substances may be used as maladaptive coping strategies, often co-occurring with other psychiatric conditions.

Moral Injury: A clinically recognised syndrome arising from actions in combat that conflict with personal values or ethics, resulting in guilt, shame, and emotional distress.

Suicidal Ideation and Self-Harm Behaviours: Veterans may experience heightened risk, making timely, professional intervention critical.

Barriers to Seeking Help

Despite the need, many Veterans delay or avoid seeking mental health support. Cultural stigma, fear of appearing weak, or a lack of trust in civilian healthcare providers often prevent them from getting the help they deserve.

Gordon Private Hospital is committed to removing barriers to access and we also work collaboratively with the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) and other Veteran support services to ensure coordinated care.
